New Delhi: Two women have been arrested by Mumbai Police’s Anti-Extortion Cell on charges of demanding Rs 10 crore as extortion from a Goregaon-based builder. The accused made the extortion after implicating the businessman’s son in a staged molestation case, police said.
On Wednesday, the accused were produced before the Esplanade Court, which remanded them to police custody till Saturday.
Accused women identified
The arrested women have been identified as Hemlata Aditya Patkar alias Hemlata Bane (39), a resident of Kandivli, and Amrina Iqbal Zaveri alias Alice alias Amrina Matthew Fernandes (33), a resident of Santacruz. They were arrested by Mumbai Police’s Anti-Extortion Cell. The women were allegedly accepting money during a trap laid on the basis of a complaint filed by the businessman.
Police sources said that the complainant, Arvind Goyal (52), a construction businessman from Goregaon West, operates a firm —- Goyal & Sons Infra LLP -— at Shri Krishna Commercial Complex in Goregaon West.
Police said Goyal’s son, Ridam, got engaged to Yashvi Shah on November 5. A party was organised on the night of November 14 at a hotel in Amboli to mark the occasion. After the celebration party was over, around 2.40 am on November 15, Ridam, his fiancée Yashvi Shah, her brother, and a friend were coming down in a hotel lift when an unknown woman reportedly stepped into the elevator. The woman alleged that Ridam had flashed a laser light at her, which led to a verbal spar and then a scuffle.
When the lift reached the ground floor, the woman allegedly raised an alarm and created a scene, after which a molestation case was registered against Ridam at Amboli police station.
They issued threats
On December 20, 2025, Hemlata Patkar reportedly called Arvind Goyal and asked him to meet her at a Starbucks café in Andheri West late at night around 10.30 pm.
During the meeting, Hemlata allegedly threatened Goyal, and warned that his son would languish in jail for years, denied bail, and that the family would be defamed through social media and the press unless he paid a large sum of money. The demand was of Rs 10 crore, but was later reduced to Rs 5.50 crore.
On December 23, 2025, Hemlata Patkar and Amrina Zaveri allegedly made a plot to demand extortion money to settle an FIR registered against Goyal’s son at Amboli Police Station. They allegedly threatened to get his bail plea cancelled, and keep him incarcerated, in case the amount was not paid.
Duo caught red-handed
The businessman tipped-off the Mumbai Police about the women's conspiracy. The Mumbai Police’s Anti-Extortion Cell laid a trap to nab the women. Goyal called the women to the Lower Parel area to offer a Rs 1.5 crore of bribe in cash, including fake currency notes, as part of the extortion money. The police arrested the two women red-handed and lodged an FIR at NM Joshi Marg Police Station.
A third accused, Utkarsh, who is apparently involved in the extortion conspiracy, is currently at large, and police have launched a manhunt for him. Further probe is in progress.
