New Delhi: The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) said that they will be plying extra buses on December 31 till midnight. This is being done to cater to the huge New Year's eve rush expected in the city. BEST said that they will be operating additional buses along key routes on that day to cater to the rush in Mumbai.
In a statement BEST said that they want to ensure "smooth and convenient travel" for those heading out for New Year celebrations in the city. They said that extra services are planned for popular destinations like the Gateway of India, Juhu Chowpatty, Gorai Creek and Marve Chowpatty. These are usually the places people in Mumbai flock to, in order to celebrate New Year.
They further said that additional buses will run on regular routes like, Route No. C-86, 203 and 231, along with air-conditioned routes No. A-21, A-112, A-116, A-247, A-272 and A-294.
The special buses will operate between 10 pm to 12:30 am and will cater to late night commuters in Mumbai. APart from this, BEST plans to operate the Heritage Tour bus service on New Year's Eve. The Heritage bus service will start at 5:30 pm on December 31 and continue till the wee hours of January 1, 20256, BEST said in a statement.
The transport department appealed to passengers to take advantage of these special bus services being operated in the city on New Year's eve and also on New Year day. The move is an attempt to cater to the increased demand of public transport during the peak festive season in Mumbai.
In November, BEST had announced a major overhaul in its services including introducing new routes and modifying several existing ones. They also converted selected AC buses into normal buses, making it more accessible to commuters. Officials said that these steps are being taken to enhance inter-suburban connectivity, ease congestion at bus depots, and provide smoother travel options.
