New Delhi: The greenfield Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), after decades of planning, is going to start commercial operations from December 25. As a result, the travel time will be reduced. Also, it will provide a huge boost to tourism and attract large-scale investments in the region.
The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has implemented this project. On Tuesday, it said in a release that the airport will have 30 Air Traffic Movements on the day it starts operations, that is, December 25.
The Navi Mumbai airport will significantly reduce congestion at the Mumbai international airport and will also give the region a multi-airport system. Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO, has reportedly said, "The commencement of operations at the Navi Mumbai International Airport reflects the Maharashtra government and CIDCO's sustained commitment to infrastructure development."
He added, "This landmark project symbolises our commitment to futuristic infrastructure, inclusive growth, and global connectivity. It is a proud moment for every citizen who believed in this vision and supported this journey over the years."
The airport has a terminal inspired by the shape of a lotus, and the entire structure shows India's cultural ethos with sustainability mixed with innovation, according to the release by CIDCO. It will boost economic growth in the region and will benefit residents of Navi Mumbai and other places like Pune, Thane, Panvel, Konkan, and Raigad. It will ensure strategic multimodal connectivity, and flights of major carriers will arrive and depart during the first day of operation.
