PM Modi inaugurates new terminal of Guwahati airport, unveils Bardoloi’s 80-foot statue | Key features

Apart from the terminal, Narendra Modi also inaugurated an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bardoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam, outside the airport. It was after his name that the airport was named.

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated a new terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Assam’s Guwahati. The new terminal has bee designed to handle nearly 13.1 million passengers every year.

New terminal built at cost of Rs 4,000 crore

The new terminal has been built for Rs 4,000 crore. The PM also took a tour of the new terminal after the inauguration. According to the news agency PTI, the total cost of the entire project is Rs 5,000 crore. Of these Rs 1,000 crore was earmarked for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.

With the inauguration of this new terminal, the Guwahati airport is looking to become a crucial aviation hub in the North East. The terminal was made keeping in mind Assam's rich diversity and cultural heritage. The terminal building has been spread across 1,40,000 square metres.

‘Major boost to Assam’s infrastructure’

Apart from the terminal, Narendra Modi also inaugurated an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bardoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam, outside the airport. It was after his name that the airport was named. PM Modi had earlier shared a glimpse of the terminal and called it a “major boost to Assam’s infrastructure”. He wrote on X, “Increased capacity means better ‘Ease of Living’ and a boost for commerce as well as tourism.”

Earlier on December 21, PM Modi had said that he would pay floral tributes at the Shaheed Smarak Sthal.“After that, I will be present in Namrup, Dibrugarh, for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited. This is an important project, which will help meet the fertilizer needs of Assam as well as other states. At the same time, it will reduce imports, as a result of which self-reliance will increase,” he added further.
