Mumbai: A massive fire broke out in a two-storey Bata showroom in Mumbai’s Crawford Market late on Sunday night. The entire stock of footwear and other items was gutted in the fire. In a separate incident, a huge fire was also reported at a scrap warehouse in Gwalior. The fire department is investigating the cause behind the blaze.
The fire at the Bata store spread quickly and gutted the whole building. Several fire engines and water tankers were sent to the scene to douse the flames. Officials confirmed that all the footwear, along with electrical wires, cables, and the false ceiling, were completely burned.
6 fire tenders, 8 water tankers manage to douse fire
District Fire Officer Santosh Sawant stated that the situation has been brought under control. “The fire started in a two-story Bata showroom. Everything inside — shoes, cables, wiring, and the ceiling — has been damaged. We managed to control the fire with the help of around six fire engines and eight water tankers. Thankfully, no one was injured. The reason behind the fire is still being investigated,” he said.
Major fire in a scrap warehouse in Gwalior
Meanwhile, another fire broke out in a scrap warehouse in the Pawansur Colony area under the Bhaodapur police station limits in Gwalior. The fire department quickly responded and controlled the blaze. No injuries were reported.
Additional Superintendent of Police Anu Beniwal said, “We got information about a warehouse fire. Our teams, along with the SDRF unit, reached the site and managed to control it. Over five fire tenders were used. So far, there are no reports of any casualties.”
The warehouse, which was located in a residential neighborhood, was used to store plastic scrap. Reports suggest that a firecracker may have triggered the blaze, which then spread rapidly because of the flammable scrap material. Over a dozen fire tenders worked for hours to contain the fire.
Municipal staff, police, and SDRF teams were present at the location. A wall was demolished with the help of a JCB machine to stop the fire from spreading. All the material stored in the warehouse was destroyed, and two nearby houses were damaged. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.
