Mumbai: Nearly a month after the first trial train coaches for Metro Line 4 were placed on tracks, trial runs on the 10.5-km stretch from Cadbury Junction in Thane to Gaimukh will begin on Monday.

The inauguration is expected to be attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. With this, the first phase of Metro Line 4 will get operational. The other sections will open in later stages.

The line is part of the 32.3-km-long Metro Line 4, also called the Green Line, along with its extension, Metro 4A. The corridor will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavali via Ghatkopar and Thane. Once functional, the route will offer a key transport link for people commuting between Mumbai and the eastern suburbs. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is targeting the end of this year to launch passenger services.

Current status

The trials are set to move forward even though Metro Line 4 currently does not have a fully operational depot. The depot at Mogharpada is yet to be built, so for now, the MMRDA will rely on inspection pits located beyond Gaimukh station in the Ghodbunder area.

On August 25, the first trial coaches for Metro Line 4 were lowered onto the tracks near Anand Nagar in Thane with the help of heavy cranes. These coaches are being used only for testing purposes, although their size and design are the same as the final rolling stock. The rolling stock contract for Line 4 was awarded in February to a joint venture between Larsen & Toubro and Alstom.
