Mumbai: The city is all set to get two new metro routes, as the Maharashtra government cleared several big infrastructure projects during a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. The cabinet approved Metro Line-11 between Wadala and Gateway of India and a 29-km circular metro line for Thane city. Along with these, other projects like expanding the Pune–Lonavala suburban train network and building a 25-km elevated road from Thane to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) were also passed.
The meeting, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, gave approval to many development plans. These included metro extensions in Pune and Nagpur, new railway stations in Pune, a global business hub in Nagpur, and new policy changes for energy and tribal development. Here are the details of the major projects approved:
This new metro line will stretch for 17.51 kilometers and will act as an extension of the green line. It will start from Anik Depot in Wadala and end at Gateway of India, passing through areas like Nagpada and Bhendi Bazaar. It will be linked to other metro lines like Metro 3 (Aqua Line), Metro 4, and also the Monorail at Wadala. It will also be connected to train stations like Byculla and CSMT. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited will handle the design, construction, and operation of this line.
Thane city will get a 29-kilometer circular metro line, which has also been approved. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will carry out this project. It is strongly supported by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is also in charge of urban development. The circular route aims to improve travel within the city and reduce traffic problems.
A new six-lane elevated road will be built to connect Thane and Mira-Bhayander with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. This 25-kilometer road will have six entry and exit points (interchanges). The project, which will cost Rs 6,430 crore, is being developed by CIDCO. It is expected to cut the travel time from the current 90 minutes to just 30 minutes.
To ease heavy traffic on the Pune–Lonavala train route, the cabinet has approved building a third and fourth railway line between the two cities. This Rs 5,100 crore project will be carried out by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). It is expected to improve train movement and reduce travel time.
