Mumbai: India marked a major milestone in its maritime sector on Saturday with the inauguration of the country’s largest cruise terminal in Mumbai. The state-of-the-art facility, named the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT), has been built at Indira Dock, Ballard Pier, at a cost of Rs 556 crore.
Spanning 415,000 square feet, the new terminal has been designed to accommodate as many as one million passengers annually. Its architectural design, inspired by the rolling waves of the ocean, pays tribute to Mumbai’s maritime legacy while positioning the city as the gateway to Indian cruise tourism.
The terminal is built around three pillars of operations; sea-port cruises, river and inland cruises, and island-lighthouse cruises. Passenger services are due to begin on September 21 , when Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to officially flag off operations.
Alongside the Mumbai terminal, a host of other maritime and energy projects were also announced, with investments totalling over Rs 7,800 crore. These included a container terminal at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata, expanded cargo handling facilities at Paradip Port in Odisha, and the Tuna Tekra Multi-Cargo Terminal in Gujarat.
