New Delhi: Renowned Punjabi comedian, Jaswinder Bhalla, died on Friday (August 22) morning at Fortis Hospital in Mohali. The actor was known for his performances in Carry On Jatta, Gaddi Jaandi Ae Chalaangaan Maardi, Jind Jaan, Naukar Wohti Da and Band Baaje. He was 65. According to reports, the actor passed away after suffering from a brain stroke. His last rites will take place on August 23 at 12 pm at Balongi crematorium near Mohali.
Jaswinder Bhalla’s sudden death has sent shock waves across the Punjabi industry. The comedian-actor, best known as Advocate Dhillon, was admitted to Fortis Hospital, where he breathed his last on Friday morning. He left an inedible mark on the Punjabi film industry with her stellar performances and comic timings. For his funeral, a large number of people are expected to gather to pay him last respects.
Carry On Jatta actor Gippy Garewal is in shock after Jaswinder Bhalla passed away on Friday morning. Taking to X, he wrote, "It’s very hard to believe. I’m in shock. He was like a father, mentor, and the talented actor to us in the whole industry, creating memories and enjoying moments like family. Our bond was very strong. This is the worst news. May he rest in peace. All my strength to the family. His legacy will live on through his work, and his impact on our lives will never be forgotten. I’ll cherish the memories we shared and the lessons he taught me. You will always be in my heart Jaswinder Bhalla Bhaji."
Punjabi actor Gurpreet Ghuggi, who has worked with the late actor in several films, also paid tribute to him on Instagram and wrote in Punbani, which loosely translates to, "I can never forget your parting… one day we will meet again in another world, my elder brother. When I opened my eyes, all the intoxication was gone; the one who was sitting beside me in the journey, got down and left.”
Actress Neeru Bajwa wrote on Instagram, “Deeply saddened to have woken up to the tragic news.Bhalla Saab was truly respected and admired, and his contributions will be remembered with great honor. Rest in peace Sir… my condolences to the family.”
Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring shared his condolences and wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Deeply saddened by the passing of Jaswinder Bhalla ji. A proud Punjabi voice around the world, his contribution and love for the community will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family & admirers.”
BJP leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal wrote, “Dr. Bhalla Ji was not only the king of Punjabi comedy but also the voice of truth & simplicity who brought smiles to millions of faces across the globe. From stage to cinema, from villages of Punjab to international platforms, his unmatched humour, warmth & wisdom made him a true global icon of Punjabi culture.”
Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal shared, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary Punjabi comedian Jaswinder Bhalla ji. A true icon who used humour not just to entertain but to deliver powerful social messages. His contribution to art and society will always be remembered. Prayers for the departed soul.”
Jaswinder Bhalla was born on May 4, 1960 and has left behind a remarkable legacy. He was the son of Master Bahadur Singh Bhalla, a primary school teacher from the village of Barmalipur. Bhalla’s humour shone when he was selected to perform for All India Radio in 1975. His first break came with the release of Chhankata in 1988, a satirical audio cassette.
He made his acting debut with Dulla Bhatti (1988) and went on to play memorable roles in a string of Punjabi blockbusters, including Mahaul Theek Hai, Jatt & Juliet, Carry On Jatta, Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua, Mr & Mrs 420, Carry on Jatta 2, and more. His characters as Inspector Sikander Singh Tiwana in Jatt & Juliet and stereotypical Advocate Dhillon in Carry On Jatta became hugely popular among audiences. He was also known for his Chhankata comedy series, which became immensely popularly during the 1990s.
