CBFC Board given full authority on Dhurandhar, rules Delhi High Court
Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar faces Delhi HC heat as Major Mohit Sharma's parents demand a stay, claiming unauthorised use of his martyr story. No stay yet; the court asks CBFC to check with the Army. "A martyr is not a commercial commodity," the plea states. Release looms Dec 5.
New Delhi: Ranveer Singh's much-hyped film Dhurandhar faces a major roadblock just before release! The family of brave Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mohit Sharma has rushed to the Delhi High Court, demanding an urgent stay.
They claim the movie wrongly uses his real-life heroics without permission, raising big questions on privacy, dignity, and national security. Will the court halt this blockbuster? Here's what the CBFC and the court have to say.
Family's strong plea
The parents of Late Major Mohit Sharma, Sushila Sharma and Rajendra Prasad Sharma, filed the petition in the Delhi High Court. They seek to block the release of Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar. According to Bar and Bench reports, the family states that media and online buzz link the film to Major Sharma's life and secret operations, but the makers never asked for their nod.
The petition calls a martyr "not a commercial commodity." It argues no one can remake a soldier's story for profit without truth, dignity, and approval, as per Bar and Bench coverage. This violates the hero's posthumous personality rights under Article 21 of the Constitution, plus the family's privacy rights.
Security and clearance issues
Big worries on national security top the plea. The family points out that the film shows sensitive army tactics, infiltration plans, and operations without proof of okay from the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI). Bar and Bench tweeted: "The parents of Ashoka Chakra Awardee, Major Mohit Sharma, have moved the Delhi High Court seeking urgent stay on the release of the film ‘Dhurandhar’." Director Dhar denied links on X, saying: "Hi, sir — our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of brave heart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM."
Updates so far on Dhurandhar case
The Delhi High Court has ruled in its final verdict and said ''It records that the certification of the film is still under consideration by CBFC. The petition is disposed of with a direction to CBFC to take into account the concerns of the parents. It is open to CBFC to send the matter to the Armed Forces, the Court says. As reported by Bar and Bench.
As far as CBFC is concerned, the board has not yet issued any certificate to the film.
