New Delhi: It’s 2025, the 25th year of the 21st century, and the concept of casteism is non-existent, except for those who become a victim of it. Honour killing is still believed to be prevalent, but as per popular belief, it is not limited to villages and rather extends its tentacles to the kothis of several upper caste city dwellers. Amidst the casual casteism and the importance of asking a stranger’s surname, comes Dhadak 2, directed by Shazia Iqbal.

The film is not a sequel to the Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter’s 2016 film but a remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, released in 2018. In Dhadak 2, director Shazia attempts to reframe the classic romance formula through a raw and socially conscious lens. Starring Siddhant Chaturvedi as Neelesh Ahirwar and Triptii Dimri as Vidhi Bhardwaj, the film delves into the complexities of love burdened by caste and systemic oppression.

Dhadak 2 story

The story of Dhadak 2 begins with a chance encounter at a wedding, where Neelesh is seen playing the dhol. Vidhi, who is a guest there, charmingly negotiates a 20% discount for another family event. While the scene seems like the classic meet-cute initially, it is soon grounded by the gravity of their shared future. The two later meet again at law college, unaware that their opposing realities will soon test the foundation of their bond.

Dhadak 2 review: Performances

Siddhant Chaturvedi delivers a compelling performance. He pours grit and vulnerability into Nilesh, carrying much of the film on his shoulders. Triptii Dimri, though impactful in limited screen time, doesn’t get enough space to fully develop Vidhi's arc. Her expressions remain consistent with past roles. Nothing extraordinary, yet visually engaging.

Ranuk Bhardwaj, aka Ronnie, Vidhi’s cousin and the poster child for caste pride, emerges as the film’s main villain. Together with his father, he orchestrates a plan to eliminate Nilesh. These plot turns feel overly dramatic, even unnecessary at times. Furthermore, their shallow presence weakens the film’s emotional core.

Supporting actors like Saurabh Sachdeva, cast as a death-bringer-like figure. Vipin Sharma shines in a brief but memorable role as Nilesh’s father and adds gravitas to the film’s loose plot. Zakir Hussain portrays the college dean and brings moral clarity with a pivotal lesson that empowers Nilesh in the final act.

WTF: Where’s the Flaw?

Dhadak 2’s love angle takes a backseat as Neelesh’s uphill battle against caste discrimination takes over. Meanwhile, Vidhi’s life appears shielded by her caste privilege, though her modern upbringing masks a conservative household. Her character, while progressive in appearance, often lacks depth due to underdeveloped writing. Those seeking a social message might find something worthwhile here. But if you're looking for a heartfelt love story, disappointment may follow.

Dhadak 2 review: Final verdict

Thematically, Dhadak 2 does raise important questions. The portrayal of caste oppression is unflinching and honest. However, where it falters is in execution. The story feels scattered, and the emotional payoff remains inconsistent. The chemistry between the leads lacks the magic expected from a romantic drama, especially one bearing the Dharma tag.

Dhadak 2 is a film with its heart in the right place, but its storytelling doesn’t quite rise to match the power of its subject. Watch if you wish to skip Saiyaara!
