New Delhi: Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone found themselves in legal soup after an FIR was registered against them and six others in connection with a fraud case involving a car with alleged manufacturing defects. The complaint has been filed by a resident of Rajasthan’s Bharatpur, Kirti Singh, who claimed that her Hyundai car had technical issues since day one.

Actors Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone are named in the FIR because under Indian law, brand ambassadors can be held accountable if the product they endorse is found defective or misleading. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019, allows the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to impose penalties on brand endorsers for false or misleading advertisements. In the complaint, Kirti Singh claimed that she purchased the car based on advertisements featuring both the stars.
The matter first came to light in Bharatpur court as a private complaint, following which the court directed Mathura Gate Police Station to register an FIR. As per the court orders, police have filed a case under Section 420 (cheating) and other relevant sections. Now, police have begun the investigation.
How is Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika associated with the brand?
Shah Rukh Khan has been associated with Hyundai since 1998. Over the years, he has appeared in several campaigns. On the other hand, Deepika became the brand ambassador of the company in December 2023. Recently, both them appeared together in an advertisement, promoting the 2024 Hyundai Creta.
It should be noted that last year, the Supreme Court ruled that celebrities share responsibilities for the advertisements they promote.
