New Delhi: In a fresh trouble for actress Nayanthara, the copyright holder of Chandramukhi, AB International, has accused the makers of her documentary, Beyond the Fairy Tale, of including portions from Rajinikanth and Jyothika’s movie, Chandramukhi, without permission.
Following the case, the Madras High Court has directed Tarc Studios to file its response in a case alleging unauthorised use of clips from the Tamil blockbuster. The documentary was released on Netflix in November 2024.
AB International argued that despite serving a legal notice demanding the removal of the clips and claiming Rs 5 crore in damages, the Netflix documentary continues to stream on the online streaming platform with the disputed content. The petition further sought to restrain Tarc Studios from using Chandramukhi footage, remove the clips from the documentary, and direct makers to submit accounts of the profit earned through the film’s streaming.
However, counsel of Tarc Studios said that negotiations were underway to resolve the issue, but the petitioner’s side denied any such talks. It further pointed out that no formal counter-affidavit had been filed so far in the case. The court has now granted the studios time until October 6 to file their response.
After the documentary was released, actor Dhanush’s production house, Wunderbar Films, filed a case against the documentary, alleging that the scenes from his film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, had been used without his consent. He further sought Rs 1 crore in damages. However, the case is still pending.
In November 2024, Nayanthara lashed out at Dhanush in an Instagram post which read, “What's even more shocking is your legal notice after the release of the trailer of the Netflix Documentary... This is an all time low from you and speaks so much about your character. I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in audio launches in front of your innocent fans but clearly you do not practice what you preach, at least not for me and my partner.”
