 Nayak sequel buzz

Anil Kapoor has acquired the copyrights to his 2001 film Nayak, nearly 25 years after its release, and plans to make a sequel, as per a Bollywood Hungama report. Producer Deepak Mukut of Sanam Teri Kasam fame previously held the rights, but Anil bought them because the film is close to his heart.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, "He plans to hold the rights as it's a film close to his heart. Also, he aspires to make a sequel to it"

 Original film story

Nayak tells the tale of a common man who becomes the Chief Minister of a state for one day, making bold changes that shake the system. Directed by Shankar, it is a remake of his 1999 Tamil film Mudhalvan and became a cult classic over the years for its relatable theme. The cast included Rani Mukerji, Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johnny Lever, Shivaji Satam, and Neena Kulkarni, with cameos by Pooja Batra and a special song appearance by Sushmita Sen.

Anil's vision

Anil knows the massive love fans have for Nayak and sees huge potential in a second part, according to the source. The source added, "He is fully aware of the love he has garnered for the film over the years and believes that the subject of Nayak has tremendous potential for a second part". Originally produced by A.S. Rathnam, no official confirmation of Nayak 2 has come yet.

Anil's past reflections

In 2021, marking 20 years of Nayak, Anil told Hindustan Times he chased director Shankar for the role after Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan passed on it. He said, "I pursued Shankar (director) after Nayak was passed up by both Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh. To this date, I'm glad I did". Anil added, "Honestly, all we knew while making the film was that it would be something special. Something for the ages. We had no clue it would gain the kind of traction that it did. I think it's the subject matter that is just so relevant and relatable. The people, the government and the tensions therein will always remain a topic of great interest and personal relevance".

Nayak's return could reignite its magic in today's political cinema scene, blending nostalgia with fresh energy.
