New Delhi: India cinema's biggest names were honoured at the 71st National Film Awards on Friday (August 1). Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar emerged as one of the celebrated winners. His directorial comeback, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, was recognised as the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, marking a triumphant moment in the filmmaker’s career.
The awards were announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during a press conference held in New Delhi, acknowledging films certified between January 1 and December 31, 2023.
Karan Johar, known for crafting emotionally resonant family dramas, reacted to the win in an Instagram post. "I am ecstatic and overwhelmed to win the national award for a film exceptionally close to my heart….. ROCKY AUR RANI KI PREM KAHAANI…. I am grateful to the jury and continue to be humbled by the enormous love the film continues to receive," he wrote.
The film didn’t stop at one honour. Its visually rich dance number, Dhindhora Baje Re, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, was awarded Best Choreography. The sequence of the song was set against an opulent Durga Puja backdrop and had already won audiences with its grandeur and precision back in 2023.
The ceremony also witnessed other memorable victories. Rani Mukerji received the Best Actress award for her compelling portrayal in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan was bestowed with his first National Award for Jawan. Vikrant Massey, recognised for 12th Fail, also joined the list of first-time recipients, with his film itself winning the prestigious Best Feature Film award.
