New Delhi: The Habitat Comedy Club was vandalised and temporarily shut down after Kunal Kamra’s controversial stand-up comedy act for making a ‘gaddar’ (traitor) joke on Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde in May this year. Now, months after it was vandalised, the owner of The Habitat, Balraj Singh Ghai was spotted at the Lalbaugcha Raja with comedian Samay Raina and Shiv Sena’s Rahool Kanal, who took the responsibility for the attack.
Now, comedian Kunal Kamra, who faced the heat for his special Naya Bharat session filmed at The Habitat, reacted to the viral clip during his reaction series.
Comedian Kunal Kamra showed the viral clip on ‘Khabar-e-Azam’ during his reaction series, in which he takes a sarcastic dig at viral clips and news of the week, along with other comedians and content creators. After playing the clip of Samay Raina hanging out with Rahul Kanal and Balraj Singh Ghai, Kamra said, “Habitat meri wajah se nahi toota tha (The Habitat was not vandalised because of me).”
He then plays a clip in which Rahool Kanal claims that the venue was vandalized because Balraj Ghai spoke rudely to him. Reacting to the same, Kamra said, “Jisne toda woh toh yeh nahi bol raha hai ki meri ki wajah se toota, (The one who broke the venue is not saying that it was done because of me)”
However, after the incident, Kanla threatened Kamra, “Whenever you [Mr Kamra] are in Mumbai, you will get a good lesson in Shiv Sena style.” To which the comedian said, “Mereko pata hai material mera kaisa hai. Main venue ko koi dikkat nahi dena chahta hoon, (Put up a black curtain. I know what kind of material I have. I don’t want to cause the venue in any trouble).”
Kamra further alleged that Ghai told him, “manage kar lenge, yaar” when he suggested to safeguard the venue. He also claimed that the venue owner was present at two to three of his shows. Sunil Sharma also verified his claim and said, “Poora has-has ke taali baja raha [Ghai] tha. Bol raha tha ki maja aa gaya aur kisi mein himmat nahi hai yeh sab karne ki, (He was laughing and clapping his hands. He said that he had a lot of fun and nobody has the confidence to do something like this).”
Kamra goes on to say in the video, “He isn’t meeting him right now for me. He’s doing it for himself. People are thinking that he’s meeting with him so I get to perform at The Habitat again. That’s not the case. If someone owns a venue where fire safety regulations are not met, the electric connection is taken from the wrong meter, the roof is spilling over…why should I apologise for these shortcomings of a venue?”
