New Delhi: Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound has advanced to the shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, announced on Tuesday. Reacting to the news, producer Karan Johar shared his excitement on social media, congratulating the team and calling it a proud moment for the film.
The shortlist features 15 titles from across the world, including Argentina’s Belén, Brazil’s The Secret Agent, France’s It Was Just an Accident, Germany’s Sound of Falling, Iraq’s The President’s Cake, Japan’s Kokuho, Jordan’s All That’s Left of You, Norway’s Sentimental Value, Palestine’s Palestine 36, South Korea’s No Other Choice, Spain’s Sirât, Switzerland’s Late Shift, Taiwan’s Left-Handed Girl and Tunisia’s The Voice of Hind Rajab.
Homebound first premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it received strong critical attention. It was later selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars and continued its global festival run.
Written and directed by Ghaywan, the film is inspired by real events and follows the story of childhood friends Shoaib, played by Ishaan Khatter, and Chandan, portrayed by Vishal Jethwa. United by friendship and a shared ambition to join the police force, their relationship is tested as personal struggles and external pressures begin to threaten their dreams.
The film also earned the second runner-up honour in the International People’s Choice Awards at the Toronto International Film Festival. Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese serves as executive producer on the project.
Alongside the International Feature Film category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced shortlists in 11 other sections, including Cinematography, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, Original Score, Original Song, Sound, Visual Effects, Makeup and Hairstyling, Casting, Animated Short Film and Live Action Short Film.
