New Delhi: The social media accounts of several Pakistani actors, cricketers, and YouTube channels have been banned again in India after some accounts were accessible in India. On Wednesday (July 2), account of Pakistani actors, including Mawra Hocane, Ahad Raza Mir, Saba Qamar, Yumna Zaidi, and Danish Taimoor were made visible in India. Additionally, the YouTube channels of Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar were also accessible.
Earlier, all social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities and Pakistani YouTube channels were banned in India, following the Pahalgam attack. In May 2025, the government directed all OTT platforms, media streaming services and digital intermediaries to discontinue web series, films, songs, podcasts and other media content originating from Pakistan to discontinue in India.
Pakistan celebs social media accounts banned again
After some of the accounts of Pakistani celebrities and YouTube channels were made accessible in India, the social media accounts were again banned in India following an emergency internal review. Upon searching the accounts, users get the message, "Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content."
After some Pakistani social media counts were visible, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) made an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a ban on all social media accounts and YouTube channels of Pakistani nationals, including celebrities, influencers, and artists, among others.
Earlier, the advisory issued by the government read, "OTT platforms, media streaming platforms and intermediaries operating in India are advised to discontinue the web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming media content, whether made available on a subscription-based model or otherwise, having its origins in Pakistan with immediate effect.”
What initiated the ban?
On April 22, 25 tourists were killed in the terror attack at Baisaran in Pahalgham and was called the deadliest attack in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack. Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group claimed the responsibility. Following the attack, India broke all ties with Pakistan and announced a series of restrictions. In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor and carried out strike on nine terror camps in Pakistan.
