New Delhi: Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s upcoming movie, Param Sundari, has courted a controversy, days after its trailer was released. Members of the Christian community have raised objection against a scene where the actors are seen romancing inside a church and has demanded its removal.
Meanwhile, the trailer received positive response and Janhvi’s monologue on South Indian actors went crazily viral on social media. However, the film has now being embroiled in the controversy over its church scene.
Param Sundari controversy
The Watchdog Foundation has written a letter to the Central Board of Certification (CBFC), the Mumbai Police, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, and the Maharashtra government demanding the removal of the church scene from the film and its trailer.
Advocate Godfrey Pimenta of the Watchdog foundation said in a statement, "In India, the deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings may attract legal scrutiny under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Precedents such as Azhar Basha Tamboli vs Ravi S Gupta & Ors and Hum Do Humare Baraah underscore the sensitive balance between freedom of expression and the protection of religious sentiments. Additionally, the CBFC, established under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, is entrusted with certifying films while taking into account both artistic expression and respect for religious feelings.”
