New Delhi: Rajkummar Rao has officially confirmed that he will be playing the titular role of former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly in the cricketer’s biopic. The schedule for the film is set to begin next year. However, the title of the film and the director are yet to be announced.
According to the Maalik actor, the delay is due to the extensive preparation that is required to undertake the role to do justice to the life and legacy of Sourav Ganguly. Rajkummar Rao needs to adapt the sports icon style, who is a left-handed batsman.
Sourav Ganguly biopic update
Speaking with Mid-Day, Rajkummar Rao said, "Everybody is taking a lot of care in recreating Dada’s life for a theatrical experience. We have pushed the shooting to next year as we needed some time for the prep. It’s a big responsibility to play one of our most iconic heroes in cricket.”
Talking about undergoing intense training, the actor shared, "While I know how to play cricket, being a left-handed batter is a different ballgame altogether. The muscle memory is all about being a right-handed batter. So, I need some time to practise. I have deliberately not met Dada yet. I want to meet him when we fully get into prep mode.”
Earlier, he confirmed playing Sourav Ganguly in his biopic. He told NDTV, "Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official – yes, I am playing him in his biopic. I am nervous. It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s going to be a lot of fun."

Meanwhile, on the work front, Rajkummar Rao was last seen in Maalik. He has now begun work on a new dark comedy directed by Aditya Nimbalkar.
