New Delhi: Fifty years ago, Sholay, one of the cult classics of Indian cinema was released on August 15, 1975. Directed by Ramesh Sippy and penned by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, the film gave us some memorable characters, including Jai and Veeru’s unforgettable friendship, revenge seeking Thakur, menacing Gabbar, and fearless Basanti.
As the film completes 50 years, it’s restored version will be screened at the prestigious Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival with its original ending and deleted scenes. In the original ending, Gabbar dies, finally. Meanwhile, over the years, the film’s shooting location gained much attraction and even became tourist spots. Let’s explore Sholay’s filming locations.
The filmmakers chose Ramanagara, a town near Bengaluru, Karnataka as the primary location of the film. The makers transformed the location into the fictional town of Ramgarh. Ramadevara Betta, Ramanagara in Karnataka served as Gabbar’s hilltop hideout, which is now a vulture sanctuary.
The village of Ramanagara, featuring dusty roads and village square was turned into the fictional town of Ramgarh and Ramanagara railway bridge is the spot where Sholay’s popular train fight scene was shot. In today’s time, tourists visit the bridge, which was once surrounded by Bollywood stars.
Savandurga Hills is located 60 km west of Bengaluru, which featured Jai and Veeru’s horse riding scenes. Another filming location was SRS Hills was used for several action sequences in the movie.
Sholay is a film that is layered with friendship, sacrifice, revenge and romance, all blended into one, making it relatable across generations. From dialogues to each character, the film is still remembers for its storyline and punchlines, including ‘Kitne aadmi the?’, ‘Jo dar gaya… samjho mar gaya’, and ‘Tumhara naam kya hai, Basanti?’, among others.
With Ramesh Sippy’s direction, RD Burman’s music, and Javed-Salim’s writing, the film turned out to be a cult classic. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, and Jaya Bachchan, among others.
