The Devil review: Darshan Thoogudeepa’s The Devil has been released in cinemas across Karnataka amid unprecedented frenzy, even as the actor continues to remain in judicial custody at Ballari Central Prison in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. The Prakash-directed action drama, which arrived in theatres on December 11, has quickly turned into a major talking point across social media, with fans treating the release as nothing less than a festival.
Featuring Rachana Rai, Mahesh Manjrekar, Achyuth Kumar and Sharmiela Mandre in key roles, the film marks one of the biggest Kannada releases of the year. Despite Darshan’s absence from promotional activities, massive crowds were seen outside theatres from the early morning shows.
Within hours of its release, The Devil began trending on X (formerly Twitter), as audiences shared their first reactions. Many posted videos from theatres showing packed halls, cheering fans, and firecracker celebrations outside multiplexes in Bengaluru and other cities.
One excited viewer wrote, “No need for words, the visual itself is the answer! This is what DBOSS means. Every frame is fire.” Another fan who entered with “zero expectations” praised the film’s momentum, saying, “First half is aramse watchable, 2nd is really good and crazy… Especially Darshan sir’s acting and Ajaneesh sir’s BGM. 2nd half nails it.”
Several users called the movie a “pure family package entertainer,” while others shared photographs of giant cut-outs of Darshan erected outside theatres. Clips also showed fans blowing whistles, dancing, and celebrating the actor’s screen presence despite the controversy surrounding him.
Amid the celebratory mood, Darshan issued a heartfelt message to his fans through his wife Vijayalakshmi. The actor expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support during a challenging period.
“This message comes straight from my heart, carried to you all by Viji… Even from a distance, I feel your presence every moment,” he wrote, acknowledging the fans’ promotions and love.
Urging fans to stay united, he added, “Please don’t worry about anything people say. Don’t let any noise, any rumour, or any negativity shake your heart. You are my strength… My biggest power is you.”
Darshan concluded with a note of hope: “Just like you believe in me, I believe in each one of you. Time has its own way of speaking the truth. Time will answer everything.”
