New Delhi: Comedian Zakir Khan created history as he became the first Indian stand-up comedian to perform a Hindi stand-up show at New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden. The 37-year-old popular comedian, who hails from Indore, headlined a sold-out show of 6,000 people. His performance scripted history for Indian stand-up as he brought Hindi comedy on the global stage.

Adding to the special moment, comedian Hasan Minhaj also joined Zakir Khan on stage during the show and cheered big for him. He also called it a “historic night for the comedy around the world”.

Zakir Khan described it as a big day in an emotional note on Instagram. He also added that it was “overwhelming” for him to entertain audiences in New York with Hindi comedy and further extended his gratitude, calling it a ‘special milestone”. He also received a standing ovation from the audiences as he concluded his performance Madison Square Garden.

On the other hand, Hasan Minaj shared a note for “Zakir Bhai’ and wrote on Instagram, “He combines storytelling and poetry in ways that are elevating the genre of comedy to places I’ve never seen before. I also think my parents love him more than me (I’m okay with that).”

About the show

The show was a part of his ongoing North American tour, which also featured Tanmay Bhat. It was a blend of his ‘sakht launda’ persona , observational humour, and poewtic shayari. In fact, ahead of the show, his show’s posters lit up Times Square billboards and he also appeared on prominent US media outlets. He also joined celebrity chef Vikas Khanna for a light-hearted cooking show.

In an interview with Fox 5 New York, Zakir shared, “Madison Square Garden was never part of the plan—it felt like a place for big movie stars, not for boys from Indore. But sometimes life goes beyond your dreams.”

Who is Zakir Khan?

Zakir Khan gained fame in 2012 after he won Comedy Central’s, India’s Best Stand-Up. He has also featured in comedy specials, including, Haq Se Single, Tathastu and Chacha Vidhayak Hain Humare. Earlier, he has also performed in London's Royal Albert Hall in 2023 and Sydney Opera House.
