Afghan national with expired visa arrested during chain-pulling in Haridwar; case registered

Haridwar: Railway Police arrested an Afghan national during an investigation into a chain‑pulling incident on the Dehradun‑Bandra Express near Roorkee. The man was found to be living illegally in India, with his visa having expired in 2021.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when the train was halted due to chain pulling. A Railway Police team began questioning passengers and noticed a suspicious man. During interrogation, he identified himself as Najibullah (46), son of Haji Bismillah, a resident of Nahiya‑3, Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Najibullah revealed that he had been studying at Darul Uloom Deoband since 2018. He admitted that his visa expired in 2021 and that he had not applied for an extension. When asked for documents, he was unable to produce any valid papers.

Railway police registered a case

The Railway Police Force registered a case for illegal stay in the country and handed him over to the Gang Canal Kotwali police. Sub‑Inspector Kamlesh Prasad of Roorkee Railway Police Station filed a formal complaint. The Ganga Canal Kotwali police confirmed that the accused has been booked under relevant sections and will be presented in court. The Intelligence Unit team also questioned him to gather more information about his activities and movements.

Frequent visitor at Piran Kaliyar

Police sources said Najibullah frequently visited Kaliyar, a religious site near Roorkee, and this aspect is also under investigation. Inspector Manohar Bhandari, in‑charge of Ganganagar police station, stated that further inquiries are being conducted to determine the extent of his stay and contacts in the region.

Authorities highlighted that the arrest underscores the importance of strict monitoring of foreign nationals residing in India. With his visa having expired four years ago, Najibullah’s case raises concerns about enforcement of immigration rules and the need for vigilance in sensitive areas.

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by law enforcement

The accused will remain in custody until he is produced before the court. Officials said further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation and directives from higher authorities. Police emphasized that such cases will be dealt with firmly to ensure security and compliance with immigration laws.
