Spearheaded by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), this cutting-edge transit system is redefining daily commutes, offering a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to the city’s congested roads.

With Phase 1 fully operational and Phase 2 swiftly taking shape, the metro is already alleviating traffic woes, cutting travel times and setting the stage for sustainable urban growth. As of April 2025, the Ahmedabad Metro operates across two primary corridors, seamlessly linking key destinations and serving as a vital lifeline for thousands of daily commuters.

Blue Line: Bridging East and West

Spanning 20.78 kilometres, the Blue Line stretches from Vastral Gam in the east to Thaltej Gam in the west, encompassing 17 stations. This corridor has become instrumental in connecting residential hubs, commercial zones and educational institutions.

A landmark achievement came in December 2024, when the final segment from Thaltej to Thaltej Gam became operational, completing this essential east–west transit route.

Red Line: North–South artery

Extending 33.92 kilometres from APMC in the south to Gandhinagar Sector-1 in the north, the Red Line comprises 20 stations and plays a pivotal role in urban connectivity. This corridor enhances access to key landmarks, including the renowned Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, while also strengthening Ahmedabad’s crucial link with Gandhinagar, the state capital.

A significant milestone was reached on 16 September 2024, when the section from Motera Stadium to Sector-1 was inaugurated, marking a major advancement in the metro’s expansion.

Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 development plans

The ambitious Phase 2 expansion is set to further integrate Ahmedabad with Gandhinagar and the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), opening new avenues for seamless connectivity.

Extending Red Line to Mahatma Mandir

Designed to enhance Gandhinagar’s access to the metro network, this 7.45-kilometre extension introduces 14 additional stations, stretching from Sector-1 to Mahatma Mandir. Construction commenced in October 2022, with completion anticipated by December 2024, promising a smoother and more efficient commuting experience.

GNLU to GIFT City

A 5.42-kilometre extension will directly link Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to GIFT City via three new stations. A breakthrough came in April 2024 with the launch of trial runs, paving the way for commercial operations expected by June 2024. This connection is set to revolutionise travel for professionals and students, easing their daily commute.

Future expansion plans in Ahmedabad’s Metro Network

The long-term vision for the Ahmedabad Metro includes further extensions to improve accessibility and convenience:

  • Airport connectivity: A proposed 5.56-kilometre extension from Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport aims to provide a hassle-free transit option for air travellers.
  • Enhanced GIFT City access: Plans are underway to strengthen connectivity to GIFT City, reinforcing its position as a premier financial hub.

While these proposed expansions await final approvals and funding, they underscore Ahmedabad’s dedication to establishing a robust, future-ready transit network.

Transforming urban mobility in Gujarat’s capital city

The Ahmedabad Metro is already making a profound impact on urban transportation, reducing dependence on road travel and easing congestion. By March 2023, daily ridership had reached an impressive 90,000 passengers. With air-conditioned coaches, cutting-edge signalling systems and a commitment to sustainability, the metro is dramatically enhancing commuting experiences for residents and visitors alike.

As Ahmedabad continues its rapid urban expansion, the metro stands as a testament to the city’s progressive approach to public transportation.
