Tirupati: Heavy rains lashed Tirupati, SPSR Nellore districts on Wednesday night, flooding low-lying areas. Ponds and lakes are overflowing while floodwaters have reached residential colonies in many areas, tv9 telugu reported.
About 11.2 cm rainfall was recorded in Dakkili and 10.8 cm rain was recorded in Balayapalli village of Tirupati. Villages have been cut off from each other, highways submerged and city roads turned into canals. A holiday has been declared for educational institutions of Gudur town in Nellore district.
Traffic came to a standstill on Chennai-Kolkata National Highway (NH-16) and floodwaters are dangerously close to many stretches between Kakuturu and Venkatachalam and near Manubolu.
Vehicles were stranded due to heavy floodwater at Varagali cross on the Chillakur National Highway. Traffic was halted near Gudur - Paricharla Vari Palem, Gudur – Vindur and on the Chittamur-Naidupet road due to heavy rain and waterlogging. Power supply was disrupted in many areas.
Chittamur, Kota, Vakadu, Chillakuru and Gudur mandals of Gudur constituency also received heavy rain. Roads in Tirupati district have been damaged due to rains. Locals have been shifted to safer places from Gudur and Swarnamukhi river is in spate.
Cyclone Ditwah weakens into low pressure area:
Cyclone Ditwah weakened and turned into a low pressure area on Wednesday and due to its impact, heavy rain, thunderstorms will likely continue in Tirupati and Nellore districts on Thursday, December 4.
Light to moderate rain is likely in Prakasam, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya and Chittoor districts.
