Cyclone Ditwah brewing in Bay of Bengal; heavy rainfall expected in South Coastal AP

Visakhapatnam: Severe cyclonic circulation near Sri Lanka in the southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic circulation on Thursday morning.

Currently, it is centered 80 km from Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 480 km from Puducherry, 580 km from Chennai.

It is expected to move gradually north-northwestwards and approach the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh by Sunday morning. The cyclone has moved at a speed of 8 km in the last 6 hours, AP State Disaster Management Authority MD Prakhar Jain said.

The IMD has alerted the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Puducherry, Lakshadweep as well as the states of AP, Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

More than 20 cm rainfall expected in some AP districts:

Due to its impact, heavy rains are expected on November 29, 30. The Amaravati Meteorological Center has said that there will be heavy rain in many parts of the state from Friday to Tuesday. It has issued an orange alert for some districts on Saturday and a red alert for some districts on Sunday. It is expected that more than 20 cm rainfall will be recorded in some areas.

The cyclone is unlikely to affect Telangana. Some districts in the state are likely to see light, scattered rain, IMD Hyderabad said.
