Another BLO dies in Bengal, family alleges excessive work pressure

The deceased BLO has been identified as Samprita Chowdhury Sanyal (48). She was working as an Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) worker. Sanyal was working as a BLO at booth number 163 in ward number 15. She died at her residence at Phulbari Pakurtala area.

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a Block Level Officer (BLO) in West Bengal’s Malda district on Wednesday. Her family alleged that she was having excessive work pressure due to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in electoral rolls, which resulted in her death.

The BLO could not rest despite illness

The deceased BLO has been identified as Samprita Chowdhury Sanyal (48). She was working as an Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) worker. Sanyal was working as a BLO at booth number 163 in ward number 15. She died at her residence at Phulbari Pakurtala area.

According to her family members, the BLO was under tremendous stress due to the workload. The family further alleged that Sanyal could not take rest despite the same was advised by the doctor due to ill health. She was also unable to take leave due to the tremendous workload.

What family said

“There was immense work pressure. Only BLOs know what kind of pressure they face,” her husband Ardhendu Chowdhury said as per news agency IANS. “The office kept pushing her to complete work on time. It affected her mentally and physically. She caught a severe cold while working in the field. She could barely speak. Though she recovered slightly after medication, she fell ill again after resuming outdoor work,” he added.

The BLO often worked till 2-3 AM: TMC

According to Trinamool Congress councillor Gayatri Ghosh, “Just yesterday she told me that new rules were being issued by the Election Commission almost every day, which was increasing the pressure. She further said, “Her husband said she could not sleep at night and often worked till 2-3 a.m. Despite so many deaths, if the Commission does not understand the gravity of the situation, I don’t know when it will. She passed away at just 48 due to immense pressure.”
