Birbhum: Hours after Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee claimed that the Election Commission had called Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) , officials at the poll body said that it was just for a spelling error in the enumeration form.
Speaking to NDTV, officials said that the economist need not need to visit the EC office for the hearing, regarding the same. Earlier, Banerjee, while speaking at a public rally in Birbhum had claimed that the commission was harassing the people of the state and had sent a notice to Sen to appear before it.
Addressing the gathering, Banerjee also referred to notices sent to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and actor-politician Dev, calling the development as ‘sad’. “On my way here, I was told that Professor Amartya Sen, the Nobel laureate who brought global recognition to our country, has been served with an SIR hearing notice. Many eminent people like actor Dev and cricketer Md Shami, who was part of Team India's World Cup winning squad, were also served notices,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying.
He added, “The only way to respond to this insult is by winning all 11 seats that Birbhum has to offer in the state assembly," said Banerjee to the gathering. The TMC leader further said, “Un-map from this state the Bangla Birodhi (anti-Bengal) BJP, which has made the people suffer such ignominy time and again.”
"Sen's mother's name also appeared on the 2002 electoral rolls, and he had cast his vote in one of the earlier elections. We will check again with EC officials of the district," a family member of Sen said while speaking to the agency.
