Assam govt to make SIT report on Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged Pakistan links public on Feb 8
Assam Chief Minister CM Himanata Biswa Sarma confirmed that government is committed to full transparency regarding the investigation. While the cabinet reportedly discussed the SIT probe informally during the evening session, the Chief Minister later formalized the announcement, stating that the public has a right to judge the facts for themselves.
New Delhi: The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, has officially scheduled the release of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report probing alleged links between Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan.
The findings are set to be disclosed during a high-profile press conference on February 8 at 10:30 AM in Guwahati, with both national and international media invited to attend.
Following a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, CM Sarma confirmed that the state government is committed to full transparency regarding the investigation. While the cabinet reportedly discussed the SIT probe informally during the evening session, the Chief Minister later formalized the announcement, stating that the public has a right to judge the facts for themselves.
"The government has nothing to hide. We believe in placing all relevant information before the citizens. The truth will prevail once the report is disclosed," Dr. Sarma told reporters.
The investigation reportedly focuses on alleged connections involving: Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Elizabeth Gogoi, wife of the Congress leader and Ali Taqueer Sheikh, a Pakistan-based individual. The Chief Minister has intensified his rhetoric in recent weeks, claiming that Gogoi’s political positions and public remarks reflect a "mindset focused on Pakistan." This narrative has sparked a fierce political firestorm in the state.
The Congress party has hit back, dismissing the probe as a "politically motivated" attempt to smear opposition leaders ahead of upcoming political battles. Gaurav Gogoi has vehemently denied the allegations, characterizing them as a tactic to deflect public attention from the state government’s governance failures.
The Congress party accused the BJP of weaponizing state machinery and questioned the timing of the SIT’s formation. The ruling BJP party members maintain the probe is a matter of "national security and public accountability."
The disclosure on February 8 is expected to be a landmark moment in Assam’s political landscape, potentially shifting the trajectory of the ongoing confrontation between the BJP and the Congress.
