Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam were sentenced to seven years in prison by an MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur on Monday. The father-son duo allegedly obtained PAN cards using forged papers.
Soon after the verdict, police took them into the custody inside the courtroom. Azam Khan, a former MP from Rampur, had only recently come out of jail after being granted bail. The case began in 2019 when BJP MLA Akash Saxena filed a complaint accusing Abdullah Azam of securing two different PAN cards with two separate birth dates.
According to the complaint, one PAN card listed January 1, 1993, as his date of birth, while the other showed December 30, 1990. The second PAN card was reportedly used by Abdullah when he filed his nomination papers for the 2017 Assembly election from Swar Tanda, a seat he went on to win.
Saxena claimed that Abdullah used the alternate date of birth to meet the minimum age requirement for contesting the polls. The complaint also alleged that Azam Khan helped him in the process. Following the allegations, police registered an FIR against the father and son under multiple sections of the IPC.
Azam Khan and son Abdullah Azam were sent to Rampur jail. Azam Khan said, "It's the court's decision, what can I say? The punishment has been imposed because we are considered guilty." The case was handled by the MP/MLA court in Rampur, the home district of Azam Khan.
