BJP forms four-member committee to look into Kolkata student gangrape case
A four-member inquiry committee has been set up by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to look into the Kolkata rape case. The team will visit the crime scene and submit its report to BJP President JP Nadda.
New Delhi: Amidst widespread outrage over the Kolkata rape case, a four-member committee set up by the central leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has arrived in Kolkata on Monday morning to look into the case.
The 24-year-old woman, who was a student of South Calcutta Law College, was allegedly gang raped by an alumnus and two other students inside the college premises on last Wednesday.
Committee to evaluate state's "law and order"
The committee, constituted by Union Minister and BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda, includes former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with MPs Biplab Deb and Manan Mishra. The committee, after visiting the crime scene, will submit a report to BJP President JP Nadda.
"BJP National President, Jagat Prakash Nadda, has strongly condemned the heinous incident of gangrape of a student at Kolkata Law College in West Bengal and expressed concern over the state's law and order situation. In this context, the party has constituted an inquiry committee comprising the following members," the letter from the party said.
Kolkata gangrape case: What we know so far
So far, there have been four arrests in the gang rape case. Manojit Misra, the main accused, a practising criminal lawyer and current general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), allegedly raped the victim. His two associates, Promit Mukherjee, Zaid Ahmed also assisted him in the crime.
The police have also arrested guard Pinaki Banerjee after questioning him in the case. He was captured on the CCTV footage of the college premises during the incident.
Officials said that a day before the incident, the victim rejected Misra's marriage proposal, saying she was "happy" with her lover and wouldn't "cheat" him. The rejection might have led to rage, and the accused decided to commit the heinous crime. Although, it is not yet confirmed if the gangrape was pre-planned.
The medical reports have confirmed the victim's allegations of gang rape, involving forceful penetration, bite marks and scratches all over her body.
