New Delhi: The body of a missing paratrooper, who had gone missing for three days, was recovered on Thursday in the upper reaches of South Kashmir's Kokernag.
He went missing during an anti-terror operation that was possibly disrupted by an avalanche or snowstorm, according to officials. His rucksack and weapon have been found along with his body, while teams continue their search for another missing paratrooper from the same operation.
Officials have stated that the two soldiers who went missing were part of an operation which was disrupted by severe weather conditions on October 6 and 7. The soldier whose body has been found possibly died due to an avalanche or snowstorm during the mission. Notably, the Indian Army is facing significant challenges in high-altitude environments.
It is extensively searching in the Kokernag region to find the second missing soldier. However, extreme weather and heavy snow are hampering the ongoing effort, putting both rescue teams and those still missing at risk.
Recently, at Ladakh's Siachen base camp, three Army personnel, including two Agniveers, were reportedly killed in a major avalanche, and the Army had launched a rescue operation. In the avalanche, soldiers from the Mahar regiment, hailing from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, died after being trapped for five hours, while an Army captain was rescued.
On Monday, an Army contingent was caught in an avalanche on Ladakh's Mount Kun, killing one soldier as the search continues for three more missing personnel. Avalanches have troubled the Army during both operations and training. The steep geography and climate of the region are constant problems for Army personnel.
