Chinese FM Wang Yi’s 2-day India visit begins today, focus on border and bilateral ties
Key meetings include talks with India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on boundary issues and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit precedes Modi's trip to China and seeks to build confidence and de-escalate tensions following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
New Delhi: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will commence a two-day visit to India on Monday. His visit will be a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to stabilise and rebuild the often-turbulent relationship between the two Asian giants.
The visit is largely framed by expectations of discussing new confidence-building measures aimed at establishing enduring peace and tranquillity along their disputed border. This high-profile diplomatic engagement also serves as a vital precursor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's anticipated trip to China later this month.
Wang Yi's arrival is widely perceived as part of a broader effort by both Beijing and New Delhi to mend ties that suffered severe strain following the deadly clashes in the Galwan Valley in 2020. While a military disengagement occurred at friction points, a full de-escalation, including the withdrawal of frontline forces, remains elusive, with an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 troops from each side still deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
The timing of the visit also carries additional weight amid reports of increasing tensions in India-US relations, particularly following former President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods and impose additional tariffs for purchasing Russian oil.
The core objective of the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit is to hold a fresh round of the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with India's National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval. Both Wang Yi and Doval are the designated special representatives tasked with navigating this complex territorial dispute.
Upon his arrival in New Delhi at approximately 4:15 PM today, Wang Yi's agenda will swiftly move into bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at 6 PM.
The following morning, Tuesday, at 11 AM, the much-anticipated SR dialogue with NSA Ajit Doval is scheduled. These high-level meetings are expected to cover a wide array of critical issues, including the delicate border situation, bilateral trade, and the potential resumption of direct flight services, which have been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and not restored due to the lingering border row.
Wang Yi is also slated to call on Prime Minister Modi at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, at 5:30 PM. This meeting holds particular significance as it unfolds just days before Prime Minister Modi's planned attendance at the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), scheduled for August 31st and September 1st in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin.
The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms between India and China dates back to a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23, 2024. Since then, both nations have initiated several steps aimed at rebuilding trust, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and New Delhi's decision to restart issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals.
The ongoing discussions regarding the resumption of direct flight services further highlight the mutual desire to normalise and enhance bilateral engagement. Notably, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar also visited China in recent months to attend SCO meetings, signalling consistent high-level interaction.
