New Delhi:  Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a three-year age relaxation for candidates applying to the state’s police and jail departments. This move comes as a major relief for thousands of aspirants who feared they had aged out of eligibility due to recruitment delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government has extended this age exemption to all categories of applicants, ensuring that the doors remain open for a massive recruitment drive totalling 32,679 posts. The relaxation is comprehensive, covering several specialised wings of the state’s security apparatus, including Constables, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Special Security Force (SSF), women battalions, mounted police, and jail warders.

A response to the "Pandemic gap"

The decision is a direct response to the unique challenges faced by the youth over the last few years. Following the notification for these 32,679 positions, both opposition leaders and ruling party MLAs voiced concerns that the delay in recruitment during the COVID-19 pandemic had unfairly penalised candidates who had crossed the age limit while waiting for the process to open. By granting this 3-year "grace period," the government aims to provide a second chance to those who were previously ineligible.

Commitment to transparency

The Chief Minister has directed officials to move forward with the recruitment process immediately and with high efficiency. The government has emphasised that the goal is not just to provide employment, but to do so through a transparent and time-bound process. This step is expected to attract a significantly larger pool of eligible candidates, ensuring that the strongest and most capable individuals join the ranks of the Uttar Pradesh Police and Jail Department.

With the official government order now issued, the recruitment machinery is set to shift into high gear to meet the state’s security needs and the aspirations of its youth.
