Delhi Police calls Mamata Banerjees claim over assault of Bengali woman and her child fake and baseless
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged Delhi police brutality against a Bengali family, sharing a video on X. However, the Delhi Police's investigation found the video to be fabricated and baseless.
Kolkata: The Delhi Police has rejected the claims of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee that the personnel assaulted a Bengali-speaking woman and her child. She took to X and wrote, "Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by the BJP in the country against the Bengalis! Where are they taking our country now?"
Refuting her claim, DCP East Delhi Abhishek Dhania said that the police probed extensively and found that the video that Mamata shared on X is "fabricated and baseless”. The woman shown in the video alleged that "four policemen came to their house, took them away to a secluded place and demanded 25,000".
As per the officer, she was advised by her relative, a political worker in Bengal, to make the video. She shared the video with him, and it was later circulated to defame the Delhi police. Dhania said, "Based on technical and local intelligence, as well as CCTV camera footage, we have gathered various evidence. Based on that evidence, we found out that the whole story told by this lady is baseless.”
He further said that during the police probe, the woman said that her relative living in Bengal's Malda district is a political worker, and advised her to make the video and share it with him. He said, "Later, he circulated the video in the local media... After a thorough investigation and inquiry, we have concluded that the entire video is baseless and fabricated... Further investigation is still going on.”
BJP leader Amit Malviya called Mamata's post spreading misinformation. He said it is a "shame on evil Mamata Banerjee for spreading fake news" and said no such incident had occurred in Bengal.
