Durgapur gang rape case: Survivor identifies key accused, including boyfriend

The survivor's lawyer, Partha Ghosh, claimed that the classmate is the "mastermind" of the gang rape incident.

New Delhi: Following the rape case of a 23-year-old woman in West Bengal's Durgapur, a man identified as Firdous Sheikh was identified by the victim. The lawyer also revealed that  five others were his accomplices in the crime.

The five co-accused include the victim's boyfriend and classmate as well. The survivor's lawyer, Partha Ghosh, claimed that the classmate is the "mastermind" of the gang rape incident. The details on the accused were revealed from the Test Identification (TI) parade report in the Durgapur Sub-divisional Court on Monday. The event was held at the Durgapur Sub-Correctional Home under the supervision of a magistrate, and the victim identified five of the accused. The victim's lawyer, Partha Ghosh, pleaded to make the report public, which the magistrate granted.

Court orders judicial custody till October 31

Following the five-day judicial custody period, all six accused were virtually presented in the Durgapur Sub-divisional Court from the correctional facility. No lawyer represented the accused during the virtual hearing, and they themselves requested the judge to grant them bail.

Ghosh stated that the judge stressed the urgent submission of the charge sheet and the speedy start of the trial process. "If the police submit the charge sheet before the next hearing on October 31, the trial process will begin very quickly. Before that, a copy of the charge sheet will be given to all parties involved in the case. Then, the trial phase will begin after framing the charges," said the lawyer.The judge denied the bail applications of the accused and ordered their judicial custody till October 31.

What happened that night

Sources say that the 2nd-year medical student, accompanied by a male friend, went out of the college premises at around 8:30 pm. All of a sudden, she was approached by an unknown man who forcefully dragged her to a secluded spot and allegedly raped her. Horrified by the incident, the male friend fled from the scene.

Knowing about the incident, the police immediately initiated an investigation. They rushed to the scene and shifted the victim to the hospital, and directed the authorities to conduct a medical examination.
