EAM Jaishankar embarks on Russia visit under shadow of US tariffs | What to expect?

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to embark on a three-day visit to Russia on Tuesday, amid strained ties with the US over India's continued purchased of Russian crude oil. During his trip, the External Affairs Minister is likely to call on Russian President Vladimir Putin along with holding wide-ranging talks with Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov.

Jaishankar is scheduled to co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation on Wednesday. He will also address the India-Russia Business Forum meeting in Moscow.

"The External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar, will undertake an official visit to Russia on 19-21 August 2025 to co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) scheduled for 20 August 2025. EAM will address the India-Russia Business Forum meeting in Moscow," the Ministry of External Affairs said in an official statement.

During the visit, Jaishankar and Lavrov will review the bilateral agenda of the two countries and share perspective on regional and global issues, the ministry said.

Jaishankar's meetings with Russian leaders in Moscow is likely to revolve around India's continued procurement of crude oil from Russia, a move that has become a latest flashpoint between New Delhi and Washington. Trump has imposed 50 per cent tariff on India, as a "penalty" for Russian oil purchases. The move was defended by India which said that its energy procurement is driven by national interest and market dynamics.

During Jaishankar's visit to Moscow, the two sides are also expected to discuss the Ukraine conflict. India has been consistently calling upon the two countries to end the conflict which has been going on for more than three years, through dialogue and diplomacy. Recently, US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian and Russian counterparts and discussed pathways to bring the war to an end. Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held a telephonic conversation after Russian President's meeting with Trump in Alaska. During the phone call, PM presented India’s “consistent position” about finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, while Putin presented his “assessment” of his conversation with Trump.
