New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has extended the timeline for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in five states and one Union Territory, granting officials an additional week to complete the exercise. The revised schedule applies to Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Uttar Pradesh. However, West Bengal has been exempted from any such extension in the deadline.

Under the updated plan, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat will now submit their Special Intensive Revision reports on December 19, 2025, instead of the earlier deadline of December 14, 2025. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been given time until December 23, 2025, replacing the previous cut-off of December 18, 2025.

Uttar Pradesh requests extra time for effective revision

Uttar Pradesh had pressed for more time to manage the revision process effectively. Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said the state had asked the Election Commission for two extra weeks to conduct the exercise in an organised manner and to ensure the accuracy of the voter list. He said the extension was necessary to allow district election officers to re-verify entries of deceased voters, those who had shifted residence and those who were untraceable. According to him, the Election Commission has extended the earlier schedule in Uttar Pradesh by 15 days, based on the eligibility date of January 1, 2026.

The revised timetable in Uttar Pradesh sets out several key steps. The counting period will continue until December 26, 2025, and the draft publication of electoral rolls will take place on December 31, 2025. Citizens may file claims and objections between December 31, 2025 and January 30, 2026.

Official to verify enumeration forms starting December 31

From December 31, 2025 to February 21, 2026, officials will verify enumeration forms, assess notices and dispose of claims and objections. The final electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh will be published on February 28, 2026.

This marks the second recent extension to the Special Intensive Revision. On November 30, the Election Commission extended the timetable by a week in 12 other states and Union Territories, giving voters more time to check their entries and confirm their inclusion in the electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections.
