New Delhi: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list has taken the country by storm, and now the Election Commission of India (ECI) is reportedly going to extend its deadline for Uttar Pradesh and several other states.
The senior officials of the ECI will reportedly meet on Thursday to review the progress of the digitisation and submission of the enumeration form. The deadline in West Bengal may also be extended, as the state will witness Assembly elections early next year. Notably, the ECI has already extended Kerala's last date to December 18 from December 11.
Several Opposition parties have slammed the EC for allegedly enforcing deadlines which have been dubbed as 'impractical' and which have exerted tremendous pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and inconvenienced voters. The Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), CPI(M) and Samajwadi Party (SP) have criticised the ECI for allegedly ignoring ground realities during the SIR process. Congress leader Pramod Tiwari has urged the poll body to adopt the more comprehensive schedule used during the 2003 revision.
The TMC said that the extension of the SIR deadline has allegedly proved the party's allegation right, with party leader Joyprakash Majumdar saying that at least 40 people have died in West Bengal due to SIR-related stress. The process has been attacked by SP president Akhilesh Yadav as well in Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, the ECI data states that 50.8 crore Enumeration Forms have been digitised so far, with around 23.22 lakh forms remaining. In Kerala, 2.74 crore forms have been digitised, about 98.5 per cent, with 100 per cent digitisation achieved in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh and Puducherry and the remaining states surpassing 99 per cent.
