In a stunning political development just days before Maharashtra’s civic body elections, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has announced that the long-standing rift within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Pawar family is over. According to the Deputy CM, the two rival factions, one led by himself and the other by his uncle, veteran politician Sharad Pawar, are moving toward a total reconciliation driven by the demands of their grassroots workers.
'No permanent enemies'
Speaking to NDTV, Ajit Pawar delivered a clear message of unity. "The workers of both parties want to unite. The two NCPs are together now. All tensions in our family have ended," he said.
This reconciliation signals a major shift since the dramatic split in 2023, when Ajit Pawar broke away from his uncle to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). At that time, Ajit claimed the original party name and the clock symbol, leaving the Sharad Pawar-led faction to rebuild under a new identity. Now, Ajit emphasises a pragmatic approach to politics, stating, "There are no permanent enemies in politics."
The battle for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad
The reunion is already manifesting on the ground in the high-stakes regions of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. For the upcoming municipal elections, both factions have decided to contest together, a move Ajit says has been met with immense joy from party cadres.
"Workers from both factions are happy that we are contesting together in these cities. It is a good thing," he said. While the current focus remains on winning the municipal seats, Ajit hinted that a permanent, formal merger could be discussed once the dust from the elections settles.
Campaigning and the family dynamic
Addressing questions about his heavy presence in Pune compared to his cousin, Supriya Sule (MP from the Sharad Pawar faction), Ajit clarified that the distribution of leadership is based on regional roots rather than internal friction. He noted that Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad are his home districts, which is why he is spearheading the efforts there.
