Kolkata: Bibhas Adhikari is not a debutant when it comes to hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons. The name of the former president of Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Nalhati Block No. 2, Birbhum, previously came up in the West Bengal primary teachers’ recruitment scam.
Now, the police have arrested him for allegedly operating a fake police station in Noida city of Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district to extort money from people. The Noida Police arrested six individuals, including Bibhas and his son, for setting up the so-called ‘International Police & Crime Investigation Bureau’, a fake office pretending to be law enforcement.
As per the Noida Police, the accused leased a location in Sector 70 on June 4. Soon after, they put up signs with a logo and colours similar to those of the central forces.
After searching the fake office, the police have found a large number of dummy international recognition ID cards. Investigators have learned that they used to file cases themselves at the police station. Then, in the name of investigation, they would call the accused and collect money themselves. Ironically, Bibhas's name came up in the teachers' recruitment scam, and the CBI-ED searched his house and office.
The CBI also searched his house in Birbhum. In April 2024, the investigators of the central agency also searched his house and ashram in Nalhati, Birbhum and seized a large number of documents from there. As per the allegations of the residents, the ashram, which 'looks like a palace' was constructed with the money he allegedly got from corruption.
