New Delhi: Four Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) based in Singapore are set to appear before the Assam Police in Guwahati on Monday in connection with the ongoing investigation into the mysterious death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
The Assam Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) has summoned a total of 11 NRIs who were allegedly present at the yacht party in Singapore on September 19, where the singer drowned. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that while one NRI has already responded to the summons, four more will join the probe this week.
“We urge the other six Singapore-based NRIs to join the investigation. As Assamese, it is their ethical and moral responsibility to cooperate,” the Chief Minister said during a Facebook Live on Sunday. “If they don’t, we will leave no stone unturned to bring them here and question them, as their statements are crucial to the SIT’s findings,” he added.
Meanwhile, the SIT has received the viscera report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi. Sarma said the findings have provided a "definite direction" to the investigation. “Within very few days, the entire chronology of the Zubeen Garg death case will be presented before the court,” he said.
So far, seven people have been arrested in connection with the case and are currently in police custody. Among those arrested is the singer's cousin, Sandipan Garg, an Assam Police officer who had accompanied Zubeen to Singapore for the Northeast India Music Festival.
Earlier, on October 1, the SIT arrested Zubeen's manager, Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, who had coordinated the festival in Singapore. Both have been booked under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Subsequently, two of Zubeen's bandmates, musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta, were taken into 14-day police custody for questioning.
