New Delhi: The Patiala House Court on Tuesday granted the transit demand of 48 hours to Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, the owners of the Goa nightclub where 25 people were charred to death recently. The Luthra brothers were earlier in the day deported from Thailand, where they had fled since the tragedy.
The Goa Police took their custody from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and completed all legal formalities before presenting the duo in the court. They will now be taken to Goa for further investigation.
The Thai Police had earlier detained them for overstaying without valid documents. They were then taken to Bangkok. Soon after, the Regional Passport Office in New Delhi issued notices to them asking for their explanation for their travel documents. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) impounded their passport, after which they were deported to India.
The deportation of two brothers came in the wake of a probe into the deadly blaze at 'Birch by Romeo Lane' nightclub located in Arpora in North Goa last week, in which 25 people lost their lives. The incident led to an investigation into alleged safety violations and lapses on the part of the management of the nightclub. Taking tough actions against the duo, the authorities also used bulldozers in the other nightclub owned by the Luthra brothers.
Just hours after the tragedy, the brothers escaped to Phuket within hours. Immediately after, an Interpol notice was issued against them, after which they were nabbed. They were taken in custody on December 11 after an intervention by the Indian authorities. Several videos circulated on social media showing their detention and deportation in Thailand. The duo landed in India by Indigo at around 2:15 pm.
