New Delhi: In the wake of recent hikes in application fees for H-1B visa holders, the Indian Embassy in the United States has activated an emergency assistance number to support Indian nationals navigating the evolving situation. The move comes amid widespread concern about the estimated 71-72% of H-1B visas currently held by Indian citizens.
The emergency contact number, which can be reached via call at +1-202-550-9931 and also through WhatsApp, is strictly for immediate emergency assistance and not for routine consular inquiries, the Embassy clarified on the social media platform X.
“Indian nationals seeking emergency assistance may call cell number +1-202-550-9931 (and WhatsApp). This number should be used only by Indian nationals seeking immediate emergency assistance and not for routine consular queries," the Indian Embassy in the US posted on X.
While the US administration's decision has raised anxieties, a senior US official sought to alleviate immediate fears, clarifying that current H-1B visa holders, regardless of their location, will not be immediately affected by the new fee structure. "Those who are visiting or leaving the country, or visiting India, don’t need to rush back before Sunday or pay the $100,000 fee. $100,000 is only for new and not current existing holders," the official stated, as reported by ANI.
In response to the developments, the Indian government has advised all its missions and posts to extend maximum possible assistance to Indian nationals who are set to travel back to the US within the next 24 hours.
The Ministry of External Affairs, through its Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, released an official statement acknowledging the reports of proposed restrictions on the US H1B visa program.
"The Government has seen reports related to the proposed restrictions on the US H1B visa program. The full implications of the measure are being studied by all concerned, including by Indian industry, which has already put out an initial analysis clarifying some perceptions related to the H1B program," the statement read.
The MEA emphasised that both Indian and US industries have a vested interest in innovation and creativity and suggested that consultations on the best path forward are expected.
