On the same day that Indias Parliament debated Operation Sindoor, Indian Special Forces launched a decisive counter-terrorism operation codenamed Operation Mahadev. This operation resulted in the elimination of Hashim Musa, also known as Suleiman Musa, the key figure behind the devastating Pahalgam attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians on April 22nd. The operation, carried out in the dense Dachigam forest area near Srinagar, marked a significant victory in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region.
Musa's background as a former Pakistani Army Special Forces commando who later joined the Lashkar-e-Taiba provided valuable insight into his operational capabilities and strategic planning. His involvement was not limited to the Pahalgam massacre; he was also linked to the brutal killing of seven tunnel workers on the Srinagar-Sonmarg highway earlier in the year. A substantial bounty of 20 lakh was placed on his head, highlighting the threat he posed.
The success of Operation Mahadev was a result of weeks of meticulous surveillance and intelligence gathering. Security agencies identified telltale signs of encrypted Chinese Ultra radio communication technology, specifically the WY SMS device, previously used by Lashkar-e-Taiba in 2016. This technology, designed to evade detection, was instrumental in pinpointing Musa's location within the Dachigam forests.
