New Delhi:  Days after a Hindu man was burnt to death, another Hindu worker was "accidentally" shot dead at a garment factory in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Bajendra Biswas, a member of the Bangladesh Ansar, was fatally shot on Monday evening while on duty at Sultana Sweaters Limited.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 PM in the Mehrabari area. The initial police reports described the event as an "accidental firing." Eyewitness testimony from fellow Ansar member APC Md Azahar Ali confirmed that the two did not argue in past or at the time of the incident.

" Noman Mia and Bajendra Das were sitting together in his room. Suddenly, Noman Mia pressed the shotgun against Bajendra Das's thigh and said, "Shall I shoot?" and then fired. After that, Noman fled the scene," he was quoted as saying by the media.

Accused arrested by police

In some media reports, the victim has also been identified as Bajendra Das, although there is no mention of his permanent address in India. According to the reports, Noman Mia, who fled the scene immediately after the shot, was later arrested by the police.

Following the fatal incident, Biswas was rushed to the Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead by the doctors due to severe bleeding.

Escalating tensions and minority safety

Although this particular incident is not linked to the target killing, it comes amid a series of attacks targeting minorities in Bangladesh.

Following the burning of the Hindu, the interim government of Bangladesh has stated there is "no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh," promising that perpetrators will not be spared. However, the international community remains on high alert. India’s MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, expressed "grave concern" over the "unremitting hostilities against minorities" in the region.

What is the Ansar?

The Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (Ansar-VDP) is a uniformed auxiliary force. These personnel are typically armed and deployed to provide security for critical infrastructure, including banks, government buildings, and garment factories like Sultana Sweaters.
