How PM Modi is pushing cultural diplomacy and why is it important
Prime Minister Narendra Modi utilizes cultural diplomacy to significantly enhance India's international relationships. His visits to Thailand (witnessing the Ramakien performance), Mauritius (Ganga Talao visit), and numerous other nations showcase shared cultural heritage. Initiatives like International Yoga Day, the emphasis on "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," and engagement with the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas further strengthen India's global image and foster mutual understanding and cooperation.
New Delhi: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured Thailand in April 2025, he observed a spectacular performance of the Ramakien, Thailand's national epic, which is hugely inspired by the Ramayana. The Ramakien stands as a testament to the lasting influence of Indian culture in Southeast Asia.
Later, PM Modi took to X and posted, "Witnessed a captivating performance of the Thai Ramayana, Ramakien. It was a truly enriching experience that beautifully showcased the shared cultural and civilisational ties between India and Thailand.”
It was the perfect way to promote cultural diplomacy to foster bilateral ties. Earlier, in March 2025, while he was visiting Mauritius, PM Modi had visited Ganga Talao. At this sacred site, he offered Ganga water brought from the Sangam. His act portrayed India's spiritual traditions that extend beyond geographical boundaries.
These gestures during his travels also reflect PM Modi’s sustained efforts to use culture as a bridge for strengthening international relationships. By celebrating shared traditions and heritage, PM Modi has positioned India's culture as a powerful tool for building diplomatic bridges.
Going a step ahead, he has also highlighted worldwide fascination with India’s culture and its rich history. He has done this as part of his effort to promote cultural diplomacy. During his travels, PM Modi has demonstrated that cultural diplomacy is not just about showcasing India’s heritage but also about fostering mutual respect and understanding.
‘Indian culture resonates globally’
In November 2024, he shared a video on X that gave glimpses from his foreign visits. In the post, PM Modi wrote, "Indian culture resonates globally. Wherever I go, I see immense enthusiasm towards our history and culture, which is extremely gladdening." The video showed how Austrian artists welcomed PM Modi with a rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ at his hotel in Vienna in July 2024. It also had a vibrant Garba performance in Poland, which PM admired; a Dandiya Raas in Bhutan, and a Bharatnatyam performance in Singapore. In Laos, the local people, joined by PM Modi, collectively performed the Bihu dance and recited the Gayatri Mantra. The video also highlighted a Ramayana presentation in Laos, and the chanting of ‘Har Har Mahadev’ along with a Ramayana presentation in Brazil. Most of these programmes were organised by the Indian diaspora there.
The video showcased how the cultural vibrance of India is spreading across the world. It also underscored the role of cultural diplomacy in fostering deeper connections and understanding across borders. Through these cultural exchanges, PM Modi has shown that cultural diplomacy plays a key role in enhancing and boosting international relationships. By sharing India’s rich traditions and establishing a connect with local communities worldwide, he has created a foundation for cooperation, respect, and collaboration.
Yoga
It was following PM Modi's initiative in 2014 that June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga, with over 170 countries participating in its first celebration. It has become a key element of PM Modi's cultural diplomacy. The PM highlights the importance of Yoga in ensuring physical and mental well-being wherever he goes. It has worked as a soft power in India's diplomatic ties.
Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam
'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' means the world is one family. PM Modi has dwelt on this ancient Sanskrit phrase that reflects global unity and interconnectedness of various nations. He has used this philosophy and principle as a driver for India's cultural diplomacy.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
PM Modi also started the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to bring together the global Indian community to boost ties and highlight the significance of cultural diplomacy. During his visits abroad, the PM makes it a point to mingle with the Indian diaspora, and always appreciates their effort in upholding the cultural identity of India. PM Modi sees the members of Indian community overseas as cultural ambassadors, who play a crucial role in boosting India’s cultural image and enhancing ties.
