New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for a significant shift in weather patterns beginning December 9th, predicting an extensive grip of cold waves and dense fog across various regions. From the frosty northern plains to the peninsular heartland, the country is expected to experience a substantial drop in temperatures and reduced visibility.

The cold wave conditions are poised to first blanket central, eastern, and northern Peninsular India from December 9th to 12th. The chill will then extend its reach to northwest and western India, where conditions are expected to persist from December 10th to 12th.

Specific states and regions under the cold wave warning include Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha from December 9th to 12th. Punjab will be under similar conditions from December 10th to 12th.

According to the weather forecast the Vidarbha and Telangana will also experience harsh weather conditions from December 9th to 10th.  Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, north Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada are expected to see a cold wave from December 11th to 12th.

Dense fog alerts

Early morning hours will bring dense fog to isolated pockets of Assam and Manipur from December 9th to 13th. Meanwhile, East Uttar Pradesh and Odisha are advised to prepare for dense fog on December 9th and 10th.

Current temperatures and emerging trends

The past 24 hours have already seen significant dips, with minimum temperatures plummeting below 5 degrees Celsius in numerous locations across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and isolated parts of Himachal Pradesh. The plains recorded their lowest at 4.5 degrees Celsius in Faridkot and Gurdaspur, Punjab.

Parts of West Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh have experienced markedly below-normal minimum temperatures. Looking ahead, a marginal rise of 1–2 degrees Celsius is anticipated over northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal. Conversely, a slight fall of 1–2 degrees Celsius is likely over Gujarat and parts of northeast and north Peninsular India.

Meteorological factors at play

The IMD attributed these weather patterns to several atmospheric phenomena like an upper-air cyclonic circulation lingering over east Bangladesh and its neighbours, a persistent Western Disturbance over north Pakistan, and a trough in the easterlies stretching along the southeast Bay of Bengal. Furthermore, the Subtropical Westerly Jet Stream, with core winds reaching up to 115 knots, continues to influence Northeast India. A fresh Western Disturbance is also on the horizon, expected to impact the western Himalayan region from December 13th.

Stormy weather for Andaman & Nicobar

In a contrasting forecast, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph from December 9th to 10th.

Crucial advisory for fishermen

In light of the prevailing weather conditions, fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into specific maritime zones. This includes the Arabian Sea (Comorin area) from December 8th to 13th, and the Bay of Bengal, encompassing the Gulf of Mannar, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, and along the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Sri Lanka, also from December 8th to 13th.
