Important to continue de-escalation on border: S Jaishankar meets Chinas Wang Yi in Delhi

New Delhi: Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in New Delhi. During the meeting, Jaishankar stressed the importance of the continuance of de-escalation on the border shared by both countries.

During his opening remarks, he said that this is the first visit by a Chinese minister to India since their "leaders met in Kazan in 2024". He said the meeting gave them a chance to talk about the bilateral ties between the two countries and global issues.

He also said that the relation must be guided by "mutual respect and mutual interests" and "differences must not become disputes." Jaishankar added that he wanted to follow up on some issues that he raised with Yi when they met in July.

'Peace in border areas'

Jaishankar mentioned the importance of maintaining peace in border areas during his remarks. He said, "The basis for any positive momentum in our ties is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas. It is also essential that the de-escalation process move forward."

He also referred to the joint statement at the SCO meet and said, "The fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is another major priority. I look forward to our exchange of views." Notably, India refused to sign the statement, which did not mention the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 and mentioned incidents in Balochistan instead.

Jaishankar referred to the imposition of US tariffs on India and said, "In the current environment, there is clearly the imperative of maintaining and enhancing stability in the global economy as well." He called for a "fair, balanced and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia. Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day".
